Mechano Growth Factor (MGF) is a synthetic peptide derived from the alternative splicing of the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) protein. Comprising 24 amino acids, MGF has a molecular mass of just over 2,866 g/mol. Known as the MGF-24aa-E peptide, this variant results from a 49 base pair (bp) insert in the human IGF-1 gene, forming a distinct isoform, IGF-1Ec.1 In rodents, an additional 52 bp insert generates IGF-1Eb.1 These IGF-1 isoforms are studied for their roles in skeletal muscle cell proliferation and repair-related signaling, with MGF expression associated with mechanical stress in laboratory models, giving it the name “mechano” growth factor.

Muscle Cell Research

Laboratory studies have examined MGF’s role in activating muscle satellite cells (a type of muscle stem cell) in models of muscle repair and regeneration following induced injury or mechanical stretching.2

Cardiac Cell Research

In animal model research, MGF has been studied for its effects on cardiac cell signaling following induced cardiac tissue injury, including its influence on mesenchymal bone marrow cell behavior in these models.3

Neuroscience Research

In animal models of induced hypoxia or ischemia, laboratory research has examined MGF’s effects on cellular signaling pathways and markers of neuronal function.4,5 Separate animal model research has examined MGF expression in relation to motor neuron signaling markers.6
